Academic Mission of the Research Center
The CHU Sainte-Justine Research Center, affiliated with the University of Montreal, excels in its academic mission. The Center plays a leading role in the field of pediatric research, which directly ties in with its academic mission in terms of the development of a highly specialized workforce and thus the creation of an essential new generation of scientists in the field of biomedical research. Through its training programs and superior support for graduate and postdoctoral students, the Research Center trains more than 300 students a year. The students are supervised by internationally recognized investigators who promote a scientific approach based on targeted areas of research. More than 150 investigators are actively involved in seven major areas of research.
Programs offered by the Research Center
Every year the Research Center offers Master’s and PhD studentships and postdoctoral fellowships to its students through its research award program . The competition deadline and the number of awards offered vary from one year to the next. Check out the section on Events and Conferences for the announcement of the competition. Although you can consult the regulations online, the forms will only be available when the competition is announced. Various programs of study are available at the University of Montreal. The CHU Sainte-Justine Mother-Child Research Center is responsible for students registered in the Biomedical Sciences Program . These students carry out their research internship for the most part at CHU Sainte-Justine. The files are analyzed by the Graduate Studies Committee made up of investigators from the Institution who recommend admission to the program based on the following criteria or prerequisites that are specific to the CHU Sainte-Justine Research Center.
- Bachelor’s level GPA greater than or equal to 3.2.
- For a Master’s: obtain at least 10 credits (3 courses of 3 credits each and 1 required course in ethics of 1 credit: “Ethics and Health Research”).
- For medical students registered in the Master’s program: obtain at least 6 credits (2 courses of 3 credits each and 1 required course in ethics of 1 credit: “Ethics and Health Research”).
- For a doctorate: obtain at least 6 credits (2 courses of 3 credits each including 1 required course of 3 credits: “Career as a Health Investigator”).
After being admitted to the University of Montreal, Master’s and PhD students must complete the “study plan” and “research topic registration” forms using the web site of the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FES) of the University of Montreal.
Students who are doing postdoctoral training must register at the University of Montreal in order to obtain accreditation for their training. At the end of their training, and on the recommendation of their elective supervisor and the Director of the Research Center, postdoctoral students may obtain an attestation from the FES that certifies that they have passed their training and indicates the nature, duration and location of the training completed.
Students Annnual Congress
For the Research Directorate, students hold a privileged place in the organization of the Center and for this reason they are given every opportunity to lead a full academic life. Thanks to the moral, financial and secretarial support of the Research Center’s Directorate, the Center’s Student Association organizes numerous activities including an annual congress that is usually held in June and which provides all the students with an opportunity to present their respective work through oral or poster presentations. The evaluation of these presentations is carried out by scientists of note in the Montreal area who are invited by the Graduate Studies Committee of the CHU Sainte-Justine Research Center. Many awards are also granted for presentations that stand out in each of the categories with a special FRSQ award of $1000 that rewards excellence in scientific work and the clarity and instructional quality of the best presentation.
The Research Center makes it possible for all its students to gain experience as scientific presenters, which proves to be extremely useful when they are called on to present their work to the world’s scientific elite at international meetings.
Participation in the annual congress arouses scientific curiosity, shapes critical minds and certainly improves the performance of students when they present their work at conferences later on in their careers.
